Correlated X-ray/Optical Variability in the Quasar MR2251-178

چکیده
Emission from Active Galactic Nuclei is known to vary strongly over time over a wide energy band, but the origin of the variability and especially of the inter-band correlations is still not well established. Here we present the results of our X-ray and optical monitoring campaign of the quasar MR 2251-178, covering a period of 2.5 years. The X-ray 2–10 keV flux is remarkably well correlated with the optical B, V and R bands, their fluctuations are almost simultaneous with a delay consistent with 0 days and not larger than 4 days in either direction. The amplitude of variations shows an intriguing behaviour: rapid, large amplitude fluctuations over tens of days in the X-rays have only small counterparts in the optical bands, while the long-term trends over hundreds of days are stronger in the B band than in X-rays. We show that simple reprocessing models, where all the optical variability arises from the variable X-ray heating, cannot simultaneously explain the discrepant variability amplitudes on different time-scales and the short delays between X-ray and optical bands. We interpret the variability and correlations, in the optically-thick accretion disc plus corona scenario, as the result of intrinsic accretion rate variations modulating both X-ray and optical emission, together with reprocessing of X-rays by the accretion disc.

BeppoSAX spectroscopy of MR2251-178: a test for ionized reflection in radio quiet QSOs
We present the 0.1–200 keV BeppoSAX spectrum of MR2251-178 observed at two epochs in 1998 separated by 5 months. Both epochs show identical spectral shape and X-ray flux. Analysis of the combined spectra allow us to confirm the presence of the ionized Fe Kα line detected by ASCA and to test the presence of reflection from ionized material. The best self-consistent spectral fit is obtained when ...
متن کاملQuasar Optical Variability in the Palomar-QUEST Survey
The ensemble variability properties of nearly 23,000 quasars are studied using the PalomarQUEST Survey. The survey has covered 15,000 square degrees multiple times over 3.5 years using 7 optical filters, and has been calibrated specifically for variability work. Palomar-QUEST allows for the study of rare objects using multiple epochs of consistently calibrated, homogeneous data, obviating the c...
متن کاملOn the contribution of microlensing to X-ray variability of high-redshifted QSOs
We consider a contribution of microlensing in X-ray variability of high-redshifted QSOs. Such an effect could be caused by stellar mass objects (SMO) located in a bulge or/and in a halo of this quasar as well as at cosmological distances between an observer and a quasar. Here, we not consider microlensing caused by deflectors in our Galaxy since it is well-known from recent MACHO, EROS and OGLE...
متن کاملHigh resolution X-ray spectra of quasars
Past X-ray observations by ASCA suggest that warm absorbers (Ovii and Oviii edges) are apparently rare in high luminosity AGNs (quasars) while they are more common in low luminosity AGNs (Seyferts). However, this could be a selection effect if high luminosity AGNs have mostly narrow absorption lines (with no strong bound free edges), which escaped detection by the low resolution of ASCA. To che...
متن کاملPHL 1092 as a transient extreme X–ray weak quasar
We report a dramatic variability event in the X–ray history of the Narrow–Line quasar PHL 1092 (z = 0.396). Our latest 2008 XMM–Newton observation reveals a flux drop of ∼ 200 with respect to the previous observation performed about 4.5 years earlier, and a drop of ∼ 135 with respect to its historical flux. Despite the huge X–ray variation, the UV flux remains constant producing a very signific...
